Mayor Hamilton Green is celebrating his 81st birthday today and in celebration former National footballer Lennox Arthur has coordinated the annual 7-a-side three-day Inter-ward Football competition to mark the occasion.
The event featuring 32-teams got underway yesterday at the Victoria ground on the East Coast. The teams are battling for a first prize of $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy, while the other top four finishers will collect; $100,000 and Youth and Sports Trophy, $70,000 and China Trading trophy and $30,000 and the Business School trophy.
Additionally AHL Kissoon has donated a 3-piece suite for the top scorer, while Ricks and Sari will give 10 hampers each to the winning and runner up teams.
Tomorrow at Den Amstel, the second day of competition starting at 2:00pm, will see Goed Fortuin vs De Kinderen, Stewartville vs Bagotville, Crane vs New Amsterdam, Pouderoyen vs Wales, Uitvlugt vs Sara Lodge and Den Amstel vs North Sophia. The respective winners will advance.
The other playing day is November 15 at Victoria when the tournament will culminate with the playoff, quarterfinals, semis and final. Play starts at 2:00pm.
Among the sponsors to have assisted are Clinton Urling on behalf of his business entity German’s Restaurant, Crown Mining, Star Computers, Massy, Nigel’s Supermarket, Nigel Pyle of Tent City, Paul Giddings of Hotel Princess Raven, Beepat and Sons, CBR Mining, MACORP and Guyana Beverage, home of Busta soft drinks along with the above mentioned trophy and cash prize and other donors.
Arthur and the teams have wished Mayor Green a very happy birthday and God’s blessing. Mayor Green, who was a former Prime Minister under the Forbes Burnham Government, has been an ardent sports fan and also an athlete in his younger days. He played football and was a good athlete. Kaieteur Sport also joins in extending best wishes for a wonderful birthday to Mayor Hamilton Green.
