After several months and two push backs, the Guyana Prize shortlist for 2014 was on Friday sent out by the Management Committee.
The awards were judged in the categories of Fiction, Poetry and Drama by a panel of writers, critics and experts in the fields of Literature, Drama, Culture and the Arts. The judges were, Mark McWatt, Ameena Gafoor, Robert Leysha and Dr. Louis Regis.
The persons who made the shortlist for the Best Book of Fiction are, Rueben Latchmansingh, Keisha McCammon and Subraj Singh, while those who made the shortlist for Best First Book of Poetry are Cedric Castello and Stanley Niamatali.
Those who made the shortlist for the Best First Book of Fiction are David Dabydeen and Jan Lowe Shinebourne, while those who made the shortlist for the Best Book of Poetry are Cyril Dabydeen, Maggie Harris and Sasenarine Persaud. In the category of Drama, the shortlisted persons are, Harold Bascom and Milton Bruce.
While congratulating those who made the shortlist, however, many writers and critics began crying foul at perceived biases in the Guyana Prize shortlist, particularly in the Poetry section. Several are of the opinion that the First Book of Poetry section was intentionally fixed in an attempt to justify the books as they have both been printed by the often criticized Caribbean Press.
The Caribbean Press was established five years ago due to a promise made by Former President, Bharrat Jagdeo to give US$100,000 per year for the establishment of a publishing house.
