– Competition resumes today at Victoria
Winners Connection salvaged some amount of pride for the visiting Lindeners and in the process sent an ominous warning to all pretenders on opening night of the inaugural GTT Round Robin / Knockout Football Competition after inflicting a crushing 6-1 triumph overRosignol United on Saturday, at the No.5 ground, West Berbice.
Marmarlaque Davidson displayed ripping form as he lashed in a treble in the 43rd, 55th and 62nd minutes, while Fitzroy Chin, Rawle Gittens and Derrol Dainty complemented his efforts with goals of their own in the 17th, 68th and 89th minutes respectively.
Oswin Carmichael’s opening strike after just 17 seconds appeared to have offered the host a little bit of hope, but as the final scoreline suggested it might have served to ignite the visitors’ offensive might.
With the win, the Lindeners move onto three points, while the Berbicians are without a point.
Carmichael’s rapid opening goal shortly after kick off meant that the visitors were off to a disastrous start. He raced on to a pinpoint pass inside the opposition’s goal area to blast his effort past the goalkeeper.
It was the closest they came to offering any resistance after then as Winners Connection commenced a clinical demolition of their nemesis afterwards.
Chin gained the equaliser with a neatly glanced header from a corner taken on the right side and that started a long period where they dominated possession, engineering quite a few raids into the Berbicians goal area.
They squandered an opportunity to stretch their advantage when the nifty Gittens was brought down in the danger zone, but tasked with the responsibility of taking the spot kick he muffed the chance to keep the scores level.
However, it did not prove costly as Davidson netted three minutes later, slotting his first time effort into the left corner, after receiving a pass from the right flank to give his team a slim 2-1lead at the break.
Intermission brought no reprieve for Rosignol United as Davidson netted his second 10 minutes after the resumption, rifling a header into the left hand corner from a cross from the right side.
It then became 4-1 seven minutes on as he netted his third, racing onto a through pass within the box, before rounding the advancing keeper and finishing into the back of the net.
Guilty of missing from the penalty mark in the earlier exchanges, Gittens made no mistake from a similar distance six minutes after connecting with a diving header into the left hand corner following a right sided cross.
Dainty condemned Rosignol United to further embarrassment one minute before full time when he sprinted on to a lobbed pass to beat the advancing keeper.
Earlier, New Amsterdam United squeaked past Milerock 2-1.
Adrian Adams registered a double in the 26th and 85th minutes for the Berbicians, while Jermaine Grandison netted in the 70th minute for the loser.
Winner of the event will pocket $500,000 and the championship trophy, while the runner-up will pocket $250,000, third and fourth placed finishers will receive $125,000 and $75,000 respectively.
The event resumes today with another doubleheader at the Victoria ground.
The opening match will see Topp XX and Ann’s Grove square off, while the feature encounter is between Golden Grove and Victoria Kings.
