President David Granger has delivered on his promise to declare November 1 of every year as Defence Force Day.
The formal declaration comes days after Granger shared his intention to make the day an annual one.
In a notice carried in Kaieteur News on Saturday November 7, President Granger shared that November 1 is designated as Defence Force Day.
The notice read, “Under the Constitution, the State’s Defence and Security Policy shall be to defend national independence, preserve the country’s sovereignty and integrity and guarantee the normal functioning of institutions and the security of citizens against armed aggression.”
Granger further noted that the Army’s role is a “most pivotal one” among the nation’s Disciplined Forces. He said that the Army is entrusted with “the sacred duty of protecting and defending the motherland as servants and guardians of the people.”
“On the National Defence Force Day, it is hoped that there shall be a number of activities to enhance the awareness of the duty of the Defence and Security Forces, to reaffirm their faith in their duty and to heighten their resolve to serve,” Granger wrote.
The day is, however, yet to be officially gazetted despite the President’s formal notice.
Just last week Sunday, on November 1, the GDF celebrated its 50th anniversary with a church service at the National Cultural Centre. During the event, President Granger had shared his plan to declare GDF Day.
“As a token of the gratitude of the nation to our military men and women, I intend to declare that today, the First of November – and that this day every year hereafter – shall be observed throughout the nation as Defence Force Day,” Guyana’s Commander-in-Chief said.
“The nation is eternally grateful to the men and women who continue to serve with commitment, with constancy and with courage in the Guyana Defence Force,” Granger continued.
Granger’s emphasis on protecting Guyana’s sovereignty comes in the wake of what he deemed increase aggression from the nation’s Western neighbour, Venezuela, which has upped its claims to large areas of sea and land awarded to Guyana.
Just recently, the GDF added 375 soldiers to its numbers.
