Dear Editor,
President Granger raises the question of cause with regards to suicide. The cause is spiritual. Simply put the need to find God. We find religion but not God. We are fascinated with the outer show and comforts of this life. When our fascination is given a sharp jolt we buckle. Some are lucky that their fascination with other things prove to be a good diversion while they suffer an horrendous temporal or permanent serious lost in relationship, condition or economy. However when more than one of these losses somehow interconnected, destroys the basis of our confidence in the system that we believe in and the support we normally expect the situation become disastrous. The fact is that we were taught to believe in a system legal or traditional, in family, friends, social religion or social support. Even though such faith is justified, our mistake is placing them before our love for God. It is often said by spiritual Master in prayer “ Sweet is thy will O Lord”. Our faith in the Creator take us through difficult time if we believe. As one English poet put it “God is in Heaven all is well with the world.” Spirituality brings a change in perspective that is healing. We need to develop more love for God. I remember an anecdote of the life of an Indian lady saint Rabia Basri. It is said that one day she was seen running through the streets with a bucket of water in one hand and a torch in the other. “What are you doing she was asked”. “I wish to out the fires of Hell and burn down the rewards of Paradise” she replied, “for the both are a hindrance to my love for God”
