-Forde faces toughest challenge against Kenyans
Genuine gold medals will be up for grabs today in the 13th Annual South American 10km Road Race, which starts today from the Earth Station on CARIFESTA Avenue from 3pm; 72 athletes will vie for genuine eighth pennyweight gold medals along with a first place prize of US$1000 in the second leg of the three-leg race today.
This is according to a press release from the Public Relations Officer for the event, Treiston Joseph. The race features athletes from Peru, one of which is a born Kenyan as well as athletes from Suriname, Grenada and Trinidad. A Trinidad-based Kenyan is also expected to be a part of the Trinidadian contingent.
Local athletes had cried fowl in another section of the print media over the inclusion of Kenyan athletes in the race today. “All systems are in place as the route has already been demarcated,” President of the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Hutson said at a simple press briefing Saturday.
Technical Delegate from Trinidad, Allan Babolall highlighted that he was pleased with the route and expects brilliant competition come race day. Some of the foreign athletes also expressed their confidence to win the event.
Those foreign athletes include Ilsida Tomere of Suriname and Boaz Lorupe of Peru. USA-based Guyanese, Euleen Josiah-Tanner has also arrived for the event and pledged her best performance for the Guyanese population.
The event will conclude in the National Park at the Children’s Monument as Guyana’s Cleveland Forde will aim to win the event for a 10th time. Forde will be hard-pressed once the Kenyans arrive.
