Hours after he allegedly chased two of his children with a cutlass, the body of 38-year-old Sham Harinauth was discovered hanging from a grill by police officers at the Ruimveldt Police Outpost, around 17:00hrs, yesterday.
Harinauth a/k Shawn, was at the time in custody at the Outpost for the alleged attack. He reportedly hanged himself with his shirt.
He fathered three children and was a carpenter by profession. He resided at Lot 41 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken told Kaieteur News that Sham Harinauth was arrested after his son reported to the police that he had assaulted him.
Hickens disclosed that the under-aged child was accompanied to the station by his sister, Shivani yesterday morning.
Hickens added that the now dead man was arrested before for an offence of similar nature. The Commander said that the man was placed on a two year- bond by the court.
Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud has ordered an investigation into the prisoner’s death. The investigation will be conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
His relatives confirmed that he was an alcoholic with a history of assaulting his family when “drunk”. However, they are questioning the circumstances surrounding the man’s death since they claimed there were other prisoners in the cell at the time of his demise.
At the Police Outpost yesterday evening, a large crown gathered as Harinauth’s body was being removed by undertakers.
A Police source told Kaieteur News that Harinauth was arrested yesterday morning, after his 18 year-old daughter, Shivani Harinauth, reported that he had chased her and her 14 year-old brother with a cutlass.
According to the source, the man was under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest.
Kaieteur News understands that Harinauth was shouting for food and a Police Constable contacted Shivani and asked her to bring food for her father. The daughter arrived at the Outpost with the food around 17:00hrs. When an officer proceeded to the prisoner’s cell to give him the food the man was dead.
Outside of the Police Outpost, the dead man’s father Harinauth cried inconsolably. He told this newspaper that he last saw his only son yesterday.
Harinauth said that he was unaware if his son had problems with anyone. “I don’t know if he had an argument with the police or another prisoner. I don’t know why he hang himself.”
“My daughter called me and tell me he dead”, a teary eyed Harinauth recounted.
The father related that his son lived alone and has no spouse.
However, the dead man’s 16-year-old daughter Keshini Harinauth explained that her father was an alcoholic. She said that her father would consume alcohol for weeks and would come home drunk regularly.
“He does behave miserable and torment people,” Keshini said.
Keshini recalled that she last saw her father alive early yesterday morning. She added that her father came home drunk and got involved in an argument with her sister, Shivani.
The young girl said that her father had accused Shivani’s boyfriend and her 14 year-old brother of assaulting him. She stated that her father reported the matter to the Police Outpost. The young girl recalled that two policemen came to their home and escorted her sister and brother to the Outpost. She said that her sister and brother returned home and her father was placed in custody.
She said that later that evening an overseas-based relative called and informed the household that her father had died in the lock-ups.
