Dear Editor,
Please permit me space to pen this letter with regards to the suicide situation in Guyana. Every cause of death by suicide or/suicide attempt is a profound statement to the realities of an issue that is often ignored and an issue that needs our collective attention and support. Firstly, Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death which is often committed out of despair. Suicide is attributed to a mental disorder such as: depression, bipolar disorder, dysfunctional personality, alcoholism, drug abuse. And stress factors such as: interpersonal relationship financial crisis, etc. Guyana with its paltry response to this issue has the second highest recorded suicide rate in the world. However, I firmly believe “it is time for us to objectively address and attend to this issue both at the macro and micro levels starting with our school system. Several days ago the Minister of Education stated the need for ‘social workers at every school.’ While, I’m convinced that the honorable Minister in his wisdom foresees and desire change, I’m also convinced that there’s an urgent need for a holistic psycho-social program to be introduced and integrated into our school curriculum which will better address our psycho-social needs hence suicide prevention. Guyana can be best described as a neurotic (emotionally unstable) society with the need for improved mental health programs and also the need for psycho-social programs which are aimed to adequately address our neurosis (emotional instability). It is imperative for any society to progress, its inhabitants must be physically, emotionally and psychologically capable to function effectively as rational human beings. Let us remind ourselves of our responsibility to this nation and each other with these famous words; “Let us cooperate for Guyana ,let us cooperate for our land, let us resolve to work, together see we do it right together, can we do it, yes we can”
