Immigration Attorneys at Law, Joan Pinnock and William Golding, will on Saturday, host a seminar targeting those who have been deported from the United States of America. The programme will begin at 9:30 am at the Regent Street Hot and Spicy branch. It will run until 6:00 pm.
Aside from the general seminar there will also be a Question and Answer session and one on one talks with the two lawyers.
Pinnock said that the idea for the programme was born out of a Diaspora conference in Jamaica, Montego Bay. She revealed that the conference requires participants to have a “day of service. They were charged with meeting deportees to determine their eligibility for return to the U.S.
It was from this that Pinnock and Golding got the idea to start their own programme to target deportees and try to help them so that these people could resume their lives with their families.
“We’re in Guyana as we are attempting to assist those who have been deported from the United States and determine whether they are eligible for return to the U.S,” said Pinnock.
She revealed that since the programme began in June, there have been calls for them to visit various Caribbean countries and related her plans to visit Trinidad and Tobago in the next few weeks.
Pinnock said that she hopes that the programme blossoms. She added that they are currently encouraging other immigration lawyers to join in the effort to help those who have been deported.
September saw the first major accomplishment for the duo when they successfully returned a Jamaican brother and sister to the U.S. The siblings were deported from the U.S 25 years ago under criminal charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
They had returned to the U.S twice after and were deported again both times. The siblings are now holders of American passports and are currently residing with their family in Maryland.
