Police appear to be no closer to solving the murder of Linden pensioner Andrew Reid, even after questioning a man they had considered to be a prime suspect in the case.
A police official disclosed that the suspect, Mark Reid, turned himself over to police about three days ago in the company of an attorney.
The official said that Reid, who is the victim’s eldest son, denied killing his father. He was eventually released on $100,000 station bail on Wednesday after police were unable to link him to the crime.
He has been ordered to report to the police daily.
Police had tried to locate Mark Reid, after the body of his 82-year-old father was found on the floor in his bedroom of his Lot 543 Canvas City, Linden, home, with a gaping head wound two Saturdays ago.
His wedding ring was missing, as well as gold chains and two rings belonging to his wife.
While the bedroom was ransacked, there was no sign of forced entry.
Indications are that the pensioner could have done little to defend himself, since he was infirm and his legs were badly swollen.
Esther Reid, the murdered man’s reputed wife, told Kaieteur News that she last saw him alive around 09.00 hrs on Saturday, October 24, when she left for church.
She returned around 12.45 hrs and immediately sensed that something was amiss, since someone had loosened all the window blinds.
“I would tie the curtains so that fresh air would come in, (but) all the curtains were down and the windows were closed.
She then entered the bedroom and found her husband’s battered body. She recalled that his upper body was on the floor while his feet were on a bench. Police said that there was no sign of forced entry to the house.
A postmortem revealed that death was due to manual strangulation and brain hemorrhage. Acting on information, police had visited the home of his son, Mark Reid, but failed to locate him.
