After a night of patience and painstaking vigilance, police, aided by residents were early yesterday morning able to capture two more bandits from a gang that had raided a Mahaicony supermarket the previous day.
Unable to hold out any longer after fire was set to the bushes in which they had sought refuge on Wednesday night, the bandits came crawling out and landed into the hands of the waiting police.
One of the bandits who was captured yesterday, a 21-year old labourer from Rosignol, West Bank Berbice, was shot in the right shoulder and is presently under police guard at the Georgetown Hospital.
So too is one of his colleagues, a 51-year old man from Charlestown in the city, who is likely to lose an eye after he received several shotgun pellets to his face.
The other bandit captured yesterday was positively identified by some of the victims of the robbery which took place at the J. Singh and Sons Supermarket at La Reasonable, Mahaicony.
Police were able to recover some of the stolen items including a DVR, which had recorded some of the bandits’ operation, and some jewellery.
They also recovered 9mm pistol with three matching rounds.
On Wednesday, around 14:00 hours, the men had held 45-year old businesswoman Lakranie Singh and her employees at gunpoint, and after beating her savagely about her body, escaped with an undisclosed amount in cash, jewellery and other valuables.
The men appeared to be well informed about the supermarket’s layout, since they also took away a DVR, which recorded footage from surveillance cameras that are located at strategic points on the premises.
A shaken Lakranie Singh, who was treated at the Mahaicony Hospital for injuries, told this newspaper that she was on the premises with her workers when four bandits stormed the place.
The woman said that while two of the bandits accosted her workers, one of them dragged her into the supermarket, beating her, while demanding cash and valuables.
“They proper beat me and pull me inside. Dey beat me terrible,” Singh told Kaieteur News.
She said the bandit warned her not to raise an alarm.
They proceeded to rob the business place and its employees of cash and other valuables.
According to Mrs. Singh, customers who were about to enter the supermarket, saw what was taking place and alerted other residents.
The villagers responded but by the time they were fully mobilized, the bandits made a hasty retreat, using Singh’s Toyota IST to aid in their getaway.
But from all indications, their getaway plan hit a snag when the driver crashed into a trench at Zeeland, a few miles away.
The bandits, sensing that they were being followed, quickly exited the car and bolted into the nearby backlands, with the police in hot pursuit.
But the oldest of the gang was quickly captured by the cops.
Realising that the robbers had fled into a bushy area, residents, who are familiar with the terrain joined in the manhunt.
Although they searched until nightfall and came up empty handed, the residents were certain that the bandits could not have escaped the cordon.
They managed to convince the police that they should stake out the area until dayclean.
Almost immediately after sunrise the residents along with the police came up with a plan.
They decided to set fire to the bushes and sure enough the plan worked.
According to a source, one of the bandits, who was overwhelmed by the thick smoke came “crawling out like an insect.”
He was promptly arrested and taken away to the nearby police station.
About 30 minutes later, another bandit, also overwhelmed by the smoke tried to make a dash for freedom but was shot.
“We decided to check de bush after the smoke get big and we hear like somebody moving inside. We see he running fuh escape. De police tell he halt but he continue running and dem man shoot he. He try fuh get up and run but he fall down again and de police dem run and capture he,” a Mahaicony resident told this newspaper.
The police did not recover any weapons from the two bandits captured yesterday morning, and they strongly believe that the men carefully stashed their weapons, since camera footage showed that all the bandits that robbed the supermarket were armed.
Kaieteur News understands that the police will be using metal detectors to comb the area for the weapons.
