The Ministry of Tourism on Sunday launched Tourism Awareness Month under the theme, “Growing the business of tourism through product innovation.”
The launch was said to be an effort in raising awareness of Guyana’s tourism potential and significance of its economic growth. The theme, according to Minister of Tourism, Cathy Hughes, reflects what is considered a priority as it relates to Guyana’s development.
Hughes said that tourism is big business and Guyana should positively benefit from this demand. As such, she said that in the month of November, “the Ministry and all its satellite organizations will be showcasing Guyana’s potential to earn from our gifts.”
The new approach claimed that Hughes embraces factors from across Guyana and will require an aggressive marketing strategy which will bring countless tourists to Guyana’s shores in search of Guyana’s diverse cultural and exotic spots.
Various small and large countries and continents alike were said to be earning billions of dollars from tourism. Hughes said, “Guyanese must not doubt the fact that our tourism products are above par. Our blend of tourism product is as rich and as attractive as any in any part of the world.”
The Ministry was said to be targeting persons from countries such as Turkey and Greece who may not know of an English-speaking country on the Atlantic and aims to sell their products to Switzerland and Budapest.
Hughes stated that the objective is to substantially enhance Guyana’s visibility in the international tourism market.
“We are firmly on the road to restoring Georgetown and adding to the list of traditional tourism products,” said Hughes.
