A man who was wanted for questioning into the shooting death of shopkeeper, Rampersaud Shivcharran, 41, at his Lot 9 Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne residence on Sunday 28th June has been arrested.
The man, Alvin Providence, 46, of Lot 22 Ankerville, Port Mourant, Corentyne, was wanted for escaping from lawful custody and possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence.
Following the shooting of Shivcharran, a father of three and owner of Debbie’s Grocery and Liquor shop, three persons were arrested and taken into custody.
Although the building was ransacked, police sources said that the killers made no attempt to rob their victim. It was also learnt that the killers left a large sum of cash and other valuables untouched. The men, who were armed, reportedly walked into the shop around 19.30 hrs and ordered everybody to be quiet. They then shot Shivcharran in the region of his heart.
Two of Shivcharran’s children were present, but they escaped to a neighbour’s house.
The man’s wife Debbie Rampersaud, who was overseas, returned to the country around 06:00 hrs on the day of the incident.
She had refuted reports that she and her husband were not on good terms, but said that she did not have a good relationship with some of her in-laws. The woman had claimed that the police had proved to be of little help.
However the police after getting conflicting information intensified their investigations and were looking at a number of theories.
The police had returned to the residence to continue their investigation. On one such visit they noticed a known character scampering from the building. The cops gave chase, but the man, who was later identified as Providence, escaped. A subsequent search of the premises unearthed three .38 rounds and one 12 gauge shotgun round.
He continued to elude police until he was nabbed by the cops who were on the hunt for him.
He was charged with being in possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence. He was also charged with escaping from lawful custody.
He appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Charlene Artiga and was remanded to jail until November 27. The investigation is ongoing.
