-had disconnected fuel line
Florida (dailymail.co.uk) – The plane that burst into flames minutes before take-off in Fort Lauderdale last week had been in storage for more than two years, it has been revealed.
The aircraft spent the last 29 months out of service – until it was leased by Dynamic Airways in September.
Twenty-two of the 101 passengers were injured when the Venezuela-bound Boeing 767 exploded on the Florida runway on Thursday, ejecting a cloud of thick black smoke.
It has now emerged that the aircraft spent the last 29 months out of service – until it was leased by Dynamic Airways in September. It had flown just 240 hours before the explosion.
The staggering news comes as an investigation reveals the main fuel line of the plane was disconnected, possibly prompting the engine to leak fuel which caught fire.
According to the aircraft records, the accident airplane was in dry storage for approximately 29 months until September 2015 when Dynamic International Airways leased the airplane,’ NTSB Spokesman Eric Weiss wrote in an update released by the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday.
He added that preliminary tests show the fuel line’s coupling assembly had disconnected near the left engine of the plane.
More tests are now being done on this component, which is rarely the focus of maintenance tests, according to the NTSB release.
One person was seriously burned when Flight 405 burst into flames.
All 101 people were on board the plane, headed to the Venezuelan capital Caracas, when they heard a bang and the aircraft was engulfed in black flames.
Photos and video from the scene show the Dynamic Airways plane engulfed in thick black flames at around 12.30pm before airport firefighters came and extinguished the fire with white foam.
A pilot taxiing behind the plane alerted air traffic control that the plane was leaking fuel right before it caught fire.
‘I was the second passenger leaving the aircraft,’ Andres Gallegos told the Miami Herald.
‘We spent probably 30 to 40 seconds before they opened the door. It was pretty nerve-racking to know the door wasn’t opening and something was on fire.’
Following the fire, the airport temporarily closed.
Dynamic Airways is a small airline founded in 2010. The company is based in Greensboro, North Carolina and connects New York, Fort Lauderdale, Venezuela and Guyana. They just announced their daily flights to Venezuela in June. Thursday’s incident appears to be their first accident.
The plane that caught fire on Thursday was built in 1986 and is one of the oldest versions of the 767 model.
Florida is the state with the largest population of Venezuelan ex-patriots.
A similar fire broke out last month at the Las Vegas airport, when a British Airways Boeing 777 plane’s left engine became engulfed in flames.
In that case everyone on board escaped with just a few minor injuries – mostly sustained escaping on the plane’s slides.
