A Corentyne cane cutter who is also a well-known race horse trainer and a father of 19, on Sunday afternoon looked on helplessly as all his earthly possession went up in flames.
The man Alfred Gray, called “Sarge”, 54, of Lot 13 Alverston, Corentyne, Berbice is now homeless after a fire suspected to be electrical in origin destroyed his two-bedroom home.
Also homeless is Gray’s daughter Marcy, 23, a housewife; his son Keron, 22, a soldier; his two-year grandson Malachi; and his six-year-old grandson, Keon, a student of the Whim Nursery school. His three-year-old daughter lives with her mother in another village.
According to Gray, he had just left home and headed for a Gymkhana at Bloomfield, not too far away. The man said that within minutes of leaving home he received a telephone call stating that his house was on fire.
He immediately returned to his home, but by the time the entire house was engulfed in flames. The man who lived in that house for over 25 years stated that he was not able to save anything except the clothes on his back. All his working tools including his cutlasses and boots were destroyed in the fire.
No one was at home when the fire started.
When he left home there was a power outage in the area. Neighbours reported that when the fire started, electricity had just returned.
The man estimated his loss to be in the vicinity of $9M. His house was well furnished. The distraught man does not know where he will stay. He is appealing for help.
