Consultations continued on Friday last on crafting a national policy to bridge disparities, support a budgeting system, and give policy direction on mainstreaming gender issues in Guyana. The nation’s youths were also given a chance to express their views on the proposed policy.
Ministerial Advisor on Gender and Policy Ms. Hazel Halley-Burnett said while work is continuing on gender related issues nationwide, there is need for a coherent comprehensive document to better coordinate and address development issues relating to Guyanese women and men.
These issues include greater support for families; legal reforms; the effect of poverty on families; education; high school dropout rates among boys; employment policies and international treaties on gender related issues signed by Guyana.
These were among some of the main issues which emerged from Friday’s discourse with youths at the public consultation at the Cornhill Street, Georgetown office of the Ministry of Social Protection.
Among the participating bodies were: The Volunteer Youth Corps, The President’s Youth Award Guyana, Youth Media Guyana, the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD), the Guyana Youth and Student Movement (GYSM), Come Alive Network Inc., the University of Guyana Student Society, the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), the Ministry of Culture, Youth andSports, Youth Action Network and the Guyana National Youth Council.
Government agencies, para-military institutions, NGOs and civil society already had discussions with the government on the issue.
The national policy will be developed and implemented through a participatory process as a key transformative measure for guaranteeing greater equality and gender and social justice for Guyanese, Halley-Burnett said.
