Team Coco’s Colombian Carlos Ospina overpowered his rivals to win the final leg and the overall title as the National Sports Commission tour of Guyana five-stage cycle road race concluded yesterday.
Ospina dominated the final stage which commenced at Kara Kara, Linden Highway and finished at Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown, a distance of 64.5 miles.
He separated himself from the peloton five miles into the race and maintained a lead of 2.5 minutes throughout. Despite the efforts of the other cyclists including Caribbean Champion Marloe Rodman of Jamaica who represented Heatwave, Darren Matthews (Coco’s), Paul De Nobrega (Alanis), Hamza Eastman (Coco’s), Andre Simon of Antigua (8 SII), Raynauth Jeffery (Coco’s), Marlon Williams (Gillette Evolution), Raul Leal (Gillette Evolution), Alonzo Greaves (Roraima), Geron Williams (Continental), Orville Hinds (Gillette Evolution), Jornel Yearwood (Bauxite Flyers), Jamol John (Coco’s), Jamaul Eastmond (Heatwave) and Colombia’s Jamie Ramirez (Coco’s), Ospina comfortably won the event in a time of 2 hours 35 minutes and 50 seconds.
Jamaul Eastmond took the runner up spot in 2:36:54, while Jeffery claimed third in 2:36:54. John, Williams and Yearwood completed the top six.
Ospina recorded an overall time of 9:58:51. Leal finished second overall in 10:03:31, while Hamza Eastman placed third in 10:03:43.Williams was fourth in 10:03:54 followed by John in 10:04:08, Graves in 10:05:15, Geron Williams 10:05:18, Paul De Nobrega 10:05:44, Matthews 10:06:15 and Rodmond 10:06:16.
Meanwhile, the World Anti Doping Association (WADA) through the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) conducted a test on some of the cyclist after the race concluded.
However, manager of Team Coco’s Ian Davis told Kaieteur Sport that he will lodge a protest sighting unfair treatment to his cyclists in relation to the test. He said that he does not have a problem with his members being tested, but members of the other teams must be tested not just a few. Davis explained that the majority of the cyclists that were tested were drawn from his team; 10 athletes were tested six are from team Coco’s.
Team Coco’s fielded the most cyclists and Race Director Malcolm Sonaram indicated that the athletes that were tested were chosen by the GOA. (Zaheer Mohamed)
