Linden’s Amelia’s Ward Jets were fashioned to an enthralling 69-67 win and capturing their first Brusches Classic when they edged Ravens in the final, compliments of their returning guest player Akeem ‘Dream’ Kanahi who emerged with a triple double after netting 17 points, 17 boards and ten steals Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
Watched by a good crowd which included Untied States based former national captain James Brusche and GABF president Nigel Hinds, the home team avenged an earlier loss where the Half Mile Bulls failed to build on early leads against a determined Colts side which scored a comfortable come from behind 71-61 win.
The final was one where the visitors could not put together a game that would disrupt the talented Kanhai, who along with back court player Amaniki Archibald and centre Allsiter Webster initiated leads through the first quarter 21-13, at half time 36-28 and heading into the fourth and final period leading 49-43.
The Ravens with their title on the line saw a spirited comeback led by national Ryan Gullen with some slick penetration and attacking the basket from Dominique Vincent and Tyrone Hamid who ended with 19, 11 and 10 points respectively.
However, the Ravens with Kanhai controlling tempo and pace of the game, along with Archibald on fire for an eventual game high 21 points and centre Omally Sampson with 10 points proved crucial to the win.
Orrin Rose the former junior national shooting guard was also able to inject his impression with the crucial down town shooting which hit the scoreboard in the final period to lift the hopes of the Jets side when it was most needed.
Rose finished with eight points with three from behind the arc and the win finally came 69-67.
Earlier, the Linden side Bulls failed to capitalize on their good starts after taking leads in the first three periods and could not close out the rampaging Colts, in the end losing 71-61. Dave Causeway and Shelroy Thomas each had 21; points for the Colts with Curleigh English getting nine. For the Bulls, Dennis Niles once again played well for 14 points, as Keifer Tappin and Travin Dryden each netted 13 apiece.
