Despite minimal rain, two full days of singles tennis allowed three junior girls to play unbeaten at the end of the singles rounds of the Tennis Inter Guiana Games. Aretta Dey in the Girls U18, Shivani Persaud in the Girls U14 and Sarah Klautky in the Girls
U12 handled business on the court to post two wins each against both Suriname and French Guiana in the overall scoreboard of the team event.
Meanwhile, based on her aggression, composure and a strong display of mental toughness, Afruica Gentle battled through a tough fight against Suriname # 1 to claim a narrow win in the final girls singles match of the day. Keenan Persaud in the Boys U14 and Kalyca Fraser in the Girls U14 also provided much entertainment when they overcame first set losses and dug deep to defeat their opponent.
These much needed wins have set the competition close with a margin of one win on the leader board where Suriname and French Guiana have 11 wins each and Guyana closely following with 10 wins. However, Girls U12 Alana Chung who was expected to secure two singles wins could not play due to an unexpected case of dengue and severe cramps in both legs.
Competition was set to continue yesterday in the doubles category with Guyana looking to make up for the earlier losses.
