Dear Editor,
I have read the news item about the ‘territorial waters’ controversy with Venezuela. I agree that we should all be, in the language of the late Margaret Thatcher, “batting for Guyana”, and my feeling is that the Chinese people may be doing that for us.
I think that, given their ‘substantial’ presence and business interests in our country, their President’s recent visit to the UK may have included a briefing to the Establishment that, as one of their former colonies, Guyana is worthy of their support, and a word in the ear of the right American person would help; America’s oil interests being involved. Thinking long term, the UK, as a member of the EU, should have a say in the matter if the International Court of Justice becomes involved.
John Public can never be sure of what goes on behind the closed doors of our political leaders. Unaware as many may be, there could be external, ‘friendly forces’ working on Guyana’s behalf, to preserve her grass and curass.
