The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) romped to a 2-1 win over Monedderlust gaining sweet revenge in the process on Tuesday night at their home ground when play in the Stag Elite League continued with two
more matches.
In the opening game, Pele further solidified their hold at the top of the points table with a solid 6-0 win over Georgetown Football Club, the widest margin of victory for any team in the SEL, surpassing Slingerz’ 5-0 win over the same opponents last week.
Like the Army did when the two sides met in the first round at the #5 ground West Coast Berbice, they ran away with the lead. Twenty minutes into the match, Captain Selwyn Isaacs received a cleared ball from a corner and volleyed with sniper like precision to rock the nets for the GDF’s opening goal.
Six minutes later, the nippy Delroy Fraser doubled the advantage for the soldiers. It was exactly the same situation up in Berbice when the sides met before and many felt that perhaps, there would have been a repeat of that situation when Monedderlust stormed back to beat the GDF.
As the exchanges continued, Monedderlust it was that would have reduced the advantage for the home team. Travis Thom was the player on target for the Berbice side in the 64th minute. The GDF however, was not in a mood to allow themselves to be taken apart by Monedderlust again and held on to take full points in the game.
In the opening match, Pele continued their excellent run of form with another clinical display, this time it was the hapless GFC which came in for rough treatment. Pele ran away 6-0 winners compliments of a double from Runnel Gordon in the 2nd and 70th minute.
Travis Grant in the 18th, Julian Joseph in the 29th, Omallo Williams on the stroke of half time (45) and Gregory Richardson with his 8th of the SEL in the 57th minute were the players on target for Pele.
The score line could have been wider were it not for the many misses by Pele. Matches were set to continue last evening at the GDF ground.
