Policeman, Quincy Holder netted twice with support from Keyron Boston and Junior Gordon, who scored one each, to register a 4-1 win for contemporary footballers of the Guyana Police Force when they opposed past
players of the same organization at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary, last Tuesday afternoon. Jolyan Lewis missed a clear cut opportunity to score early in the first session but made amends shortly afterwards when he sent in a ripper to narrow the score, albeit inconsequentially.
The match got underway under the scorching heat of the afternoon sun and the younger players took advantage, raiding their opponents’ goal with abnormal frequency. The blunders were many but eventually Holder distinguished himself from the bunch and after racing down the right flank, sent in his team’s first success, a wicked right foot shot that sped past the opposition’s goalie, Andrew ‘Docka’ Bright. Persistency on the part of the current lawmen resulted in another goal, this time off the boot of Junior Gordon who dexterously evaded the oppositions’ defence before plastering their goalkeeper.
Bones were creaking as the former officers attempted to match the skills and energy of their contemporary counterparts but try as they might, they could not find that magic shot and those of the present batch went into half time with a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Upon resumption, Lewis, always a thorn in the opposition’s side, was gifted a penalty but goofed the shot, sending the ball wide. He made amends less than 5 minutes later after dribbling past the opposition’s defence and sending in a light tap that evaded the advancing custodian.
Commander of A Division, Clifton Hicken, took to the field at the start of the second session and manned the right wing. He received a torrid reception as the younger officers guarded their advantage zealously. It was in fading lights that the present officers tested the skills of the opposing goalkeeper, Andrew ‘Docka’ Bright and found him wanting. Two goals later, and with the field shrouded in darkness, former national defender, Earl O’Neil, who carried the whistle, sounded the final chime that handed the honours to the young batch of lawmen.
