Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh an organisation based at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara on Sunday last honoured Guyana and West Indies star batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul for his achievements
at a ceremony held at the aforementioned address.
The organisation presented a plaque to Chanderpaul while former national cricketer Ravindranauth Seeram and Ravi Dev delivered speeches; Ramakrishna Seeraj showed video footage of Chanderpaul’s career.
Speaking at the function, Chanderpaul, who holds the record for the most unbeaten centuries (18) in test cricket, expressed gratitude to the organisation for hosting him, adding that it is an honour to be recognised for his achievements.
He urged the young members of the organisation to take their education seriously. “I would like to congratulate the students of the Saraswati School of Cornelia Ida on their success at the CSEC exams and I urge you to encourage others,” he added.
“The best investment you can make is to get a proper education. I used cricket to elevate my self in society, but my education suffered as a result of spending too much time training. Today you can advance a career in sports and still parallel that with a proper education,” he explained.
Chanderpaul who has 11,867 runs with a highest score of 203 at an average of 51.37 from 164 tests said that religion played an important role in his life.
The left-hander also paid a visit to the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora and said he is impressed with the facility. (Zaheer Mohamed)
