A large crowd was denied the opportunity of witnessing a dramatic finish to the Parsun Outboard Inter-County softball final after bad light put an end to the contest between Demerara A and B teams yesterday at Everest Cricket Club.
Demerara B needed 13 to win off 11 balls with two wickets in hand when play was halted in fading light and both teams were declared joint winners by the organisers.
Batting first Demerara A mustered 195-8 off their allotted 20 overs. Navin Singh struck a fluent 59, while Chien Gittens slammed 56. Vishnu Tammechandra claimed 2-25 and Azaad Azeez 2-28.
In reply, Demerara B suffered some early hiccups before Azeez and Mohamed Karim steadied the chase with level-headed batting, however Sewchand Budhu kept Demerara A in the hunt with steady bowling. The contest swung either side as wickets continued to tumble even though the runs kept flowing; Demerara B ended on 183-8 in 18.1 overs. Man of the match Azeez scored 42 and Karim 36; Budhu snared 3-29.
In the first semi final, Demerara A overcame Berbice A by eight wickets. Berbice A batted first and managed 121 all out in 18.3 overs. John Percival made 30 as Richard Latif picked up 4-19 to take the man of the match trophy; Khalid Haslim had 3-23 and Martin Dutchin 2-28.
Demerara A responded with 123-2 in 10.4 overs. Gittens stroked 51 and Latif 20.
Demerara B beat Essequibo B by 117 runs in their semi final game. Demerara B took first strike and posted 214-6 in 20 overs. Amrit Rai cracked 89 to earn the player of the match award; Safraz Karim got 43 and Lincoln Leander 24. Vijay Surujpaul and Shaz Grosvenor captured two wickets each. Essequibo B were routed for 97 in 15.2 overs in reply. Patrick Rooplall made 22 as Shalendra Ramnauth grabbed 5-18 and Leo Singh 3-13.
Greg Singh with 252 runs including two centuries and eight wickets was given the tournament’s most valuable player and best batsman awards, Budhu who picked up 10 wickets took the best bowler prize. The losing semifinalists received a trophy and $100,000 each, while the winners took home a trophy and $400,000 each. Additionally each participating team received prizes.
The competition which was organised by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc was sponsored by Crown Mining Supplies the distributor of Parsun Outboard, Ansa Mc Al under their Stag Beer brand and Digicel among others.
