“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” Those words were uttered by famed US basketball star Michael Jordan.
And those very words capture the journey of legal assistant, turned Attorney-at-law, Alaira Murphy, who was admitted to the bar on Wednesday. Her Petition was presented by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes before Justice Roxanne George Wiltshire.
In presenting the petition, Hughes underscored the young lawyer’s education, qualification and working experience. Murphy graduated with her LLB degree from the University of Guyana in 2007. She subsequently gained entry to the Hugh Wooding Law School to study for the Legal Education Certificate, in 2012.
In her first address to the court as an Attorney, Murphy noted her gratitude, exhilaration and humility for having overcome a road filled with great hurdles to make her lifelong dream a reality.
“I will not complain, but rather I am thankful that through those experiences it allowed me to see that I possess great strength and determination and that I am not one to give up in the face of adversity…Your Honour, I thank my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for causing me to see this day.”
Noting the similarity between her road to achievement, and the words of the famous basketball player, Murphy noted that success was inevitable because she never gave up, even when faced with adversity.
“Today … yes … I feel like Mike … I have had my own share of missed shots, times of loss and failure, but I never gave up. With God at the helm charting my course, today this is why I have succeeded.”
As she embarks on her new journey as an Attorney, Murphy promised to uphold to rules of ethics, and to act with integrity and do nothing to bring the profession into disrepute.
“As I embark into this noble profession I am aware of the great responsibilities that rest on my shoulders…I vow to uphold the principles of this esteemed profession and to dedicate myself to the service of this land, this people and this community.”
The young Attorney also expressed heartfelt gratitude to her parents, family and friends for their support.
“This moment not only belongs to me, but also to my parents, relatives, fiancé, friends and others, who have supported me on this journey,” she said.
