A gunman, pretending to be suffering from severe back pain, yesterday robbed a doctor and four nurses of their personal belongings at the Sophia Health Centre. The incident occurred shortly after 11:00 hrs.
According to reports, a man who gave his name as Kevin James, of Lot 285 Festival City, visited the health centre and pretended to be in severe back pain as a result of a fall.
That same man had visited the health centre some time last week for another alleged ailment. On that occasion, he gave his name as Andre Hicken, 18, of ‘B’ Field Sophia.
While the gunman was inside the medical centre, his accomplice was on the “lookout” in the waiting area inside of the compound.
According to the doctor, he was seeing a patient when a nurse entered the room and informed him about the “patient” with back pain.
“I told the nurse to give him (bandit) treatment but when she went to him, he refused so I told her let him wait his turn because there were other patients waiting,” the doctor explained.
He added that a couple seconds after the first nurse leave, another nurse from the dressing room entered his room and asked for his help in another case.
“I finished off with my patient and I went into the dressing room with the nurse. The (bandit) rushed into the room and said ‘nobody move’ and then he pulled out a gun,” the doctor recounted.
He added that the man pointed the gun at him and collected his gold band and chain and then instructed the nurses to put their phones in his bag.
While all this was happening, the other health care workers and patients had no idea that a robbery was taking place.
“Everything happened really fast. The men robbed the doctor and nurses and walked out like nothing happened,” another health worker commented.
She added that the men waited until the place was almost empty before they struck.
“It looks like someone was here this morning (yesterday) and when they see the crowd gone, they call the bandits,” the worker opined.
Investigations are ongoing.
