Following close on the heels of a recent tour to Brazil, the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) is continuing its drive to popularise the sport once again by staging regular activities involving both local and international teams.
Yesterday, during a simple ceremony which was conducted in the Boardroom of the Guyana Olympic Association, the 5th Annual Tradewind Tankers ‘True Champions’ Tournament was launched before members of the Federation including President John Flores, Patron Lenox Shuffler, Coach Ian Wills, Treasurer Leota Branford and officials of GuyOil General Manager (Acting)- Lesley Benjamin and Operations Manager Reggie Bhagwandin.
The Competition which had had an international component for the past three years will run from November 20-22, at the National Gymnasium and clubs from Suriname, French Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil are expected to join clubs from Guyana in the battle for supremacy.
Flores, who has been at the helm of the Federation since last year and was re-elected unoposed to serve for another four years in his remarks spoke of the importance of the tournament which according to him is used as a guage to judge the standard of the players here.
He added that with the emerging talent on display in local competitions, the upcoming tournament will be used to showcase such abilities, while at the same time emphasising the bright future in store for the sport.
Flores also said that a number of good players who did not make the rip to Brazil will be exposed during the tournament thereby allowing the coaches have a wider pool to select from in the future.
Commenting on which clubs will represent Guyana, the GVF President said the coaches will meet shortly to identify those players after witnessing them in a competition set for this weekend.
Benjamin in her remarks spoke of the Company’s support for sport which according to her has increased, informing that many other disciplines have recently benefitted from their generosity, namely cricket (Blind and Softball), motor racing just to mention a few.
She pointed out that they are happy with the progress and organisation of the tournament and promised continued support in the future.
The opening day of the tournament will see the March Past of teams from 16:00 hrs.
Both male and female teams will be vying for top honours.
