On a day which marks the birth date of Guyanese Boxer Cliff Anderson, who died in 1998 at age 77 and in whose honour the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Homestretch Avenue is named, the venue will host the opening day of a 10-day Futsal football tournament for the first time in three years when the Banks Beer Inter-Ministries tournament begins there today.
Banks DIH Brands Manager Brain Choo-Hen presents the winning GT Beer Trophy to Director of Sports Chris Jones.
Rawle Toney, who represented the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), speaking at the launching of the 32-team tournament, said, the GFF sanctioned the event and following the formation of a Beach and Futsal Association by the GFF, the Federation wanted to contribute to this venture. Toney added that Banks DIH is always there to support sports.
Banks DIH’s Brands Manager Brian Choo-Hen noted that the Futsal season is here and that GT Beer was delighted to be a part of this venture and encouraged the fans to come out and support their Ministries and entities.
Teams will only be allowed to field players who are working with or officially associated with the Ministries or companies they play for and each team will be required to register 15 players from which they pick their final team throughout the competition which climaxes on November 1 with the finals.
The winning team will collect $200,000, the runners-up $150,000 & the 3rd place team $50,000. Admission for the first round is $300, while the entry cost for the Semi-finals will be $500 and for the final $1,000.
