Despite United States Boxing Association and other help GBA still need more support
By Michael Benjamin
When President of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle left Guyana last week to attend the
International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Congress in Doha, Qatar he had committed to utilize the opportunity to drum up support for the impending ‘Back to the Future’ Caribbean Goodwill Tournament here in Guyana from November 26-29.
The Congress has since concluded and Mr. Ninvalle subsequently journeyed to the United States of America to solicit further support for the championships. Kaieteur Sport engaged Mr. Ninvalle yesterday afternoon and he said that so far he has enjoyed moderate success even as he continues to seek further support. The GBA President said that while in Doha, Qatar he spoke with President of the United States Boxing Association, Ray Silvas, who is also the head of the AIBA Referees/Judges Commission and he has donated several pairs of boxing gloves for use in the impending tournament.
Mr. Ninvalle said that he also spoke with the President of the AIBA, Dr. Wu Ching-kuo for similar assistance and he has advised that he (Ninvalle) address his request to the head of the America Boxing Confederation (AIBA) Argentine, Osvaldo Bisbal, who would then process the request. Mr. Ninvalle said that he will speak to the Secretary of the GBA, Sean Richmond, to have the mail dispatched expeditiously.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ninvalle continues to plead for support for the Caribbean Goodwill Tournament. He said that the GBA is going for broke and is employing every strategy to have a qualitative tournament. An early estimate has placed expenditure at around six million dollars and already the GBA has benefitted from the largesse of the GOA after its President, K A Juman Yasssin committed to donate a huge portion of that expenditure. The GBA President has also received several similar commitments from Guyanese in the USA Diaspora but he is still to collect any of it.
Indeed, the tournament will be very competitive as more than twelve countries have confirmed their participation. Jamaica has been the latest country to do so and President of the Jamaica Amateur Boxing Association (JABA), Stephen Jones said that he is in the process of staging a box off, starting this Friday, to enable selectors to choose their best options. He also said that they will be sending at least four boxers to the championships.
St Lucia and French Guiana have also identified their boxers for the championship and President of the St Lucia Amateur Boxing Association (SLABA), David ‘Shakes’ Christopher has indicated that his boys will be primed up for the challenge ahead.
The other countries that have affirmed their participation are Anguilla, Martinique, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and The Bahamas Islands. The other countries invited but still to confirm participation are Venezuela, Belize, Aruba, Cayman Islands and the US Virgin Islands.
Thirty local boxers have been called up to prepare for the championship but this number will be trimmed down after the boxers participate in the impending National Open Championships. The first draft of local boxers is Tyronne Lashley (RHJ), Jamal Eastman (RHJ) Michael April (Tiger Eye), Glenroy Smith (EBG), Dennis Thomas (GPF), Quincy Small (HE/USA), Travis Hubbard (HE), Keevin Allicock (HE), Nankumar Singh (REP), Klaus Daniels (REP), Anandram Dharamraj (REP), Clifton Graham (REP), Jason Barker (REP), Delon Charles (FYF), Richard Subrattie (FYF),
Seon Griffith (FYF), Orin Bancroft (FYF), Ron Smith (FYF), Dewani Lampkin (REP), Junior Henry (FYF), Taseka Howard (FYF), Theresa London (FYF), Clairmont Gibson (GDF), Aquincy Harvey (GDF), Desmond Amsterdam (GDF), Markember Pierre (GDF), Trevon King (GDF), Enoch John (GDF), Quincy Boyce (GDF) and Dwon Thompson (GDF).
The squad will be under the tutelage of several; coaches including Terrence Poole, Sebert Blake, Wincel Thomas, Clifton Moore, Adrian Thomas and James Wallcott.
