Home team Monedderlust have maintained their unbeaten run at the #5 ground and their billing as a team that is dangerous coming from behind when they clawed back to draw with Alpha United in the feature game of a double header in the Stag Elite League (SEL) on Saturday evening last.
Alpha United’s Delon Lanferman (#11) seeks to keep the ball in play against Monedderlust on Saturday night at the #5 ground.
The opening game produced a hard fought 1-0 win for Slingerz FC over a tough Fruta Conquerors outfit, Slingerz having to play the match minus the four players who are at the center of an International Transfer Certificate (ITC) matter with the Guyana Football Federation.
Alpha went into the game with the intention of taking full points to overtake current leaders Pele FC and for all but 10 minutes of the first half were on course in that regard but as they have done in all their home games to date, Monedderlust spoiled the visitors party as they did against the Guyana Defence Force and Georgetown Football Club.
It has almost become a norm now for Monedderlust to concede early, against the GDF they fell behind in the 13th minute, against GFC it was the 10th minute and on Saturday night it was even earlier, Delon Lanferman, Alpha’s most lethal forward who is now tied on six goals apiece with Pele’s Gregory Richardson, put Alpha ahead in the 6th minute.
Lanferman, who continues to enjoy a good league so far, maintained his knack for finishing with another well executed goal, Alwin McDonald standing between the uprights for Monedderlust couldn’t stop ‘The Hammer’ from taking the lead.
It took that goal from Alpha to wake up the home team which started to piece together some excellent build ups, their wide runs and accurate crosses created challenges for Guyana’s leading club side.
The West Berbice fans did not disappoint and another fair sized crowd was on hand to urge their team on. That they did admirably to the extent that it aided in the home side neutralizing Alpha’s advantage with 10 minutes to the half time whistle.
Forward, Sean Jackman received a pass in the 18 yard box, controlled the ball between two defenders before turning and unleashing a left foot shot that rocketed past Dorville Stewart in goal for Alpha.
The second half produced multiple chances for Alpha but they did not make those chances count for them, Lanferman, his Captain Daniel Wilson and William Europe missing chances. Kithson Bain who came off the bench tried his utmost to bring some energy to the forward line but once again, potency in the attacking third was their downfall. Monedderlust were happy to come away with one point in their first draw of the season; Alpha would be ruing yet again the fact that they threw away too many goals.
The opening shindig was a close tussle between a depleted Slingerz and Conquerors. The Slingerz FC management deciding to play without the players whom the GFF had directed could not take the field due to their ITC’s from their originating clubs were still outstanding which Slingerz FC is contending, is not the case.
The four players are Keith James, Jolanshoy McDowall and Winslow McDowall of St. Vincent & The Grenadines and Guyanese Domini Garnett. The GFF is still deliberating on the issue having also carried out their investigation.
Conquerors stood rock solid while creating a few chances even as Slingerz had some good moments also. The Tucville based side was playing almost flawless up until the ball was handled in the area by one of their players in the 58th minute.
Slingerz welcomed with open arms the opportunity to take the lead; their Captain Tischard Joseph took on the responsibility himself and buried his shot past custodian Alex Murray who brought some excellent saves in the first half.
The remaining minutes failed to produce any other goals. The final score 1-0 in favour of Slingerz kept them in third place behind Pele and Alpha.
