Thirty five years after winning a bronze medal at the Moscow Olympics, the only one procured by any Guyanese athlete to date, Michael Anthony Parris returns to the Soviet country to attend the World Olympians Forum (WOF) slated for October 20-22. Parris is expected to join other dignitaries from around the world in discussions aimed at improving the fortunes of fellow Olympians like himself.
Minister Nicolette Henry presented Parris with a jersey decorated with the Jaguar emblem during his courtesy visit in the presence of Jeff Sankies.
Last week Thursday, Mr. Parris paid a courtesy call on Minister within the Ministry of Education, Department of Culture, Youth and Sport, Nicolette Henry, at her Main Street office. He was accompanied by former President of the Guyana Judo Association, Jeff Sankies, who had represented this country at this forum on several occasions.
Minister Henry extended a warm welcome to both principals even as she recognized Mr. Parris’ accomplishment. She labeled Parris as a role model and a mentor to Guyana’s youth and promised to engage him in the promotion of positive lifestyles upon his return to Guyana. The Minister also said that she will agitate for the implementation of this initiative during Guyana’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations which will feature Guyana’s outstanding sports personalities.
Meanwhile, the WOF brings together 143 Olympic Associations, Olympians, representatives of the International Olympic Committee together with the Olympic family, Governments, and other key stakeholders to share best practices and discuss the topics of greatest concern of Olympians.
The forum is also a platform that brings together the key figures from the Olympic family worldwide to promote the Olympic values and to discuss the key issues for Olympians and the Olympic Movement around the globe.
Mr. Parris expressed gratitude to Minister Henry for taking time out of her tight schedule to accommodate him. He noted that the impending forum will provide the platform for the ventilation of ideas and strategies to improve the lives of past Olympians. The Guyanese sports ambassador further promised to utilize the opportunity at the impending forum to agitate for assistance for his counterparts in need of support to improve their wellbeing.
This is the second time in months that Parris has been recognized for his contribution to his country. Only two months ago, the executives of the Guyana Boxing Association had honoured him by naming its nursery tournament in his honour.
