Dear Editor,
I recently read an article with the headline: ‘North West residents demand equality and Justice – want transportation costs reduced as for Berbicians’.
In the article, the current Regional Chairman is supporting the request. It seems that the RC did not fully remember what was told to him to say. It is passing strange that Mr. Ashley is making this kind of representation when this situation abounded for 23 years under the Government that he supported and subsequently campaigned for in 2011 and 2016. Was it not the PPP that in 1992 promised two new boats to ply the North West route? Maybe the current RC was not born as yet but he grew up to support the Party that did not deliver on its promises.
Editor, for the information of your readers, the North West has gone to the dogs under the past administration. There was the death of the agriculture sector and corruption in every conceivable department.
Electricity five hours per night and sometimes not at all for months, yet the fuel bill was high, as if consumers were treated to a 24 hour supply.
Fuel was purchased (and according to reports, still is) from friendly suppliers so that anyone, including the present hierarchy, could pass in and collect full containers for use in rented and personal vehicles, etc.
Supplies to the Hospital and Government Departments have been contracted to ‘friendly’ suppliers and spouses of department heads.
Contracts and other documents are reportedly still being taken to the home of a previous senior official for him to backdate and sign.
The ‘Old’ uncle of a former Minister is still on a job at the Ministry of Works (Mabaruma) that affords him a salary and an ATV to do his personal rounds.
These may be some things that the Regional authorities could look into rather than ‘supporting positions’ that were sticking in the eyes for the entire period of the PPP reign.
The truth is that the people in the North West are losing their patience waiting on the new government to look into Region 1 and not leave them to the mercy of those of the PPP who still behave like they run the country.
North West resident
