Led by workmanlike goals from Anthony Ronaldo and Shaqville Batson, Rose Hall Town ‘B’
defeated Rose Hall Town ‘A’ 2-0 to lift the first ever Leon Wiggins Tribute 5-a-side tournament which was organised by the Rose Hall Town Pepsi Under-19 cricket team.
Watched by a large crowd at the Area ‘H’ ground, RHT ‘B’ team displayed discipline, team work and good ball control to emerge victorious in a keenly contested final.
Earlier in the day, RHT ‘A’ cruised past RHT ‘D’ 2-0, former Guyana Under-19 cricketer Clinton Pestano showing that he is multi skilled as he netted both goals. Rose Hall Town ‘B’ defeated RHT ‘C’ on a sudden death penalty kicks after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time. Trevor Simpson scored the winning goal after the score was again tied at 3-3.
The winning team was presented with the Leon Wiggins Tribute Trophy by Mr. Wiggins himself, a former treasurer and football coordinator of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster described the tournament as a success and praised the players for displaying a high level of discipline. The club Foster noted is interested in promoting football but would only do so if the players form themselves into a properly organised body, be discipline, hardworking and committed.
He disclosed that more tournaments would be organised by the RHTY&SC and the Pepsi Under-19 team in the future as part of their Say No To Drugs and Yes To Sports programme.
The main aim Foster stated would be to lift football to the same standard as cricket in Rose Hall Town.
Leon Wiggins expressed gratitude to his former club for honouring him and praised them for the outstanding work they have been doing for youths, the elderly and less fortunate. The winning team also received the winner take all prize of $20,000.
