Upstarts, Georgetown Football Club (GFC) has maintained that billing with yet another
robust display from their young brigade when the Stag Elite League organised by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) continued on Wednesday night last at the GFC ground.
Enjoying home advantage, GFC erased a 2-0 deficit that was racked up by the rampant Fruta Conquerors to come away with an even share of the points in an enthralling showdown.
The evening’s opening game saw Pele putting on another clinical display led by the league’s leading goal scorer (Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson) as they ran away 3-0 winners to move back into the top spot in the points table.
GFC found themselves trailing by two goals by the 27th minute of the match, Conquerors through Kwamie La Fleur in the 9th minute and Raphael Edwards in the 27th gave their team a comfortable advantage.
But it was not all that comfort since GFC has built up a reputation of never letting up against any opposition, Slingerz and GDF would know all about that since the Bourda boys drew with the former and defeated the latter.
On the night, the GFC gradually came into their own, they reduced the deficit in the 34th minute thanks to a Cortez Kellman goal. With the minutes ticking away and Conquerors being able to keep the one goal advantage, they felt that it was all over but GFC’s Romario Welcome had other ideas.
In the 4th minute of added on time (90+4) Welcome welcomed the opportunity to tuck in the equalizer for GFC much to the delight of his fellow peers and fans. Conquerors were left heartbroken with that goal.
The opening game saw the league’s fastest goal being scored, Pele’s Captain, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant blasting the nest a mere 45 seconds into the match against West Berbice’ Monedderlust.
The league’s leading goal scorer, Gregory Richardson then came into the fray with a well executed goal to double the lead for Pele.
It was Richardson’s sixth goal in as many matches, one more than Alpha United’s Delon Lanferman.
Darren Harris then put the game way beyond the reach of Monedderlust with Pele’s third goal which propelled them to 14 points and the top of the table as they also kept their unbeaten record intact with their fourth win in six matches along with two draws.
Matches will continue on Saturday back at the #5 ground, West Coast Berbice.
Fruta Conquerors is down to play Slingerz and Monedderlust will face Alpha United.
