– had incised wound to neck
What had first appeared to be the tragic drowning of a young mother and child in the Lower Pomeroon is now being treated as a possible murder.
Attica Alicia Sukhai, 22, and her two-year- old daughter, Xolani Sukhai were found dead last Sunday morning under a dilapidated landing next to her home at Grant Experience in the Lower Pomeroon River.
The woman’s nine-month-old daughter, Alicia Sukhai, was found alive, with one of her feet stuck in a hole on the landing.
At the time, police had suggested that Sukhai had taken her children to bathe sometime around Saturday night, and that the young mother and elder child drowned.
But a post mortem, performed yesterday by Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh, revealed that Sukhai died from an incise wound to her neck.
In the case of the two-year-old, cause of death was given as asphyxiation due to drowning. Police have since detained a man who reportedly “used to hang around” Sukhai. A police source said that investigators also received reports that the man was seen ‘paddling away’ from the area near Sukhai’s home. The detained man has reportedly told police that he knew Sukhai.
According to reports, a woman was passing Sukhai’s residence when she spotted a crying toddler with her foot stuck in a hole on the landing that facilitates access to the Pomeroon River.
She reportedly rushed to the baby’s rescue and saw the bodies of Sukhai and her daughter.
“When she lifted the baby out of the hole, she looked around and saw the mother’s body and when she looked further, she saw the other child. She immediately took the baby and went back into her boat and proceeded to Charity Police Station,” a police source said.
The child was taken at the Oscar Joseph Hospital for medical attention.
Kaieteur News was told that Sukhai has no close neighbours who would have heard the crying toddler.
Detectives found the baby’s stroller and clothes believed to be that of the mother and her two-year-old nearby.
The woman’s face and body, according to police, were badly damaged apparently by piranhas. Her daughter’s body was found intact about two yards away from her in a clump of bushes.
Residents said that Sukhai, her partner and two daughters moved to Lower Pomeroon from Charity three months ago to live in a house that was given to them by a relative.
Around Thursday, her partner allegedly left for the interior to seek employment.
It is unclear if the woman’s partner is aware of what transpired, but her sister, Nadine told police that she last saw Sukahi and her children on Saturday afternoon.
