A police rank at the center of the incident involving the electrical wire which burnt two women outside a Pouderoyen bar is in custody.
This is even as five months pregnant victim Lukeisha Clarke of lot C Middle Street Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara remains hospitalized and Althea Mcpherson the other woman injured at the scene was treated for burns to her legs.
Reports indicate that the man who fired the shot in the air was an off-duty policeman, who was a patron at the bar, celebrating a birthday.
It was reported that the weapon used was a police .38 service revolver.
Kaieteur News also learned that the said cop was actually on 21-days annual leave and should not have been carrying a service revolver.
Police sources also indicate that he was at the bar with a group of persons drinking and actually exited the bar at closing time.
Contrary to earlier reports, information received was that there was no police patrol on the scene but rather it was the off duty rank who, amidst celebrating someone’s birthday, fired a shot while he was actually on the roadway.
The owner of the Good Times Hangout Bar located at lot 6 Middle Streets Pouderoyen, refuting allegations, said that their bar was not part of the controversy as the shooting happened at about 1:45hrs on Saturday morning on the Main Road by a patron who had exited the location.
Police Corporal David Hunte was assisting his wife to close the business premises when he heard what sounded like a gunshot. That single shot severed a live electrical wire, which landed on the back of five months pregnant vendor.
Witnesses at the scene also confirmed that the bar was closing up when they heard the single gunshot and ran to the front. “We see Clarke was on the ground and the wire wrapped around her and Mr. Hunte run out to the road to help right away,” one witness said.
Minutes later, a male pointed out that the man who fired the shot, hurriedly left the scene for the Public Road. Corporal Hunte then went in search of the man who turned out to be a policeman.
When Hunte identified himself as a policeman, the rank handed over a bag which he claimed contained the firearm but when it was checked no weapon was inside.
He was then taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station where the firearm was found on his person and he was handed over to the Vreed-en- Hoop Police station.
When Kaieteur News contacted the bar owners they pledged to offer assistance to the injured women.
