Sand Pipers and North Soesdyke recorded victories when the East Bank Demerara Cricket Association (EBDCA) T20 tournament continued yesterday at Everest Cricket Club.
Sand Pipers defeated Providence by eight wickets in the morning encounter. Providence never recovered from a terrible start and were bowled out for 73 in 14 overs, batting first.
Bishan Santool 21, Christopher Shaw 19 and Bachan Persaud 10 were the only batsmen that showed fight as Roopnarine Ramsundar and K. Moore picked up two wickets each.
Sand Pipers responded with 76-2 in 11 overs. Ramsundar and Terrence De Cunha set their team on course with an opening stand of 61 before De Cunha was bowled by pacer Dellon Mc Kenzie for 26 which contained four fours. Ramsundar who was caught at the wicket off Mc Kenzie for 30 hit three fours and one six while Tajeram Persaud made 12 not out. Mc Kenzie took 2-23.
North Soesdyke overcame Laluni by one wicket in an exciting afternoon fixture. Laluni batted first and managed 158-7. Elroy Henry anchored the innings with a fluent 56. He added 34 for the second wicket with Dereck Teyjnarine after opener David Francis (00) was brilliantly caught at gully by Leroy Primo off pacer Nyron Baksh. Teyjnarine hit five fours before he went for 27 while Alex Dundas was bowled by off-spinner Rajesh Singh for two shortly after. Henry then featured in a fourth wicket partnership of 50 with Julian Mohabir to frustrate their opponents somewhat. Henry hit five fours before he was dismissed for 56 while Mohabir made 24 (4×4). Jordon Persaud propped up the total with a rapid 20 (3×4) as Rajesh Singh and Ronald Jaisingh claimed two wickets each.
North Soesdyke were reduced to 7-2, losing openers Sahadeo Hardaiow (03) and S. Stuart (00), but former West Indies U19 batsman Hemraj Garbarran steadied the chase with level-headed batting. He and Primo added 62 for the third wicket before Primo was run out for 23 (1×4). Laluni then picked up the wickets of Joseph Perrry (14) and Terrence Liverpool (18) to stay in the hunt.
However, Garbarran continued to time the ball well, hitting seven fours before he was run out for 47 while Anwar Rahaman went for 15 as Laluni looked certain for victory. But a robust 23 from Jai Singh who smashed a four and a maximum when six was needed off the last two balls saw his team home. Left arm spinner Alex Dundas captured 3-28 and Francis 2-26 for Laluni who put down a number of chances in the field.
