The election is over and the PPP has been defeated but signs are emerging to indicate that while the victory was a breath of fresh air for most of the people, it is beginning to turn sour for them. It is clear that the economy is ailing, the sugar and rice industries are in serious trouble and the outlook for gold, bauxite and timber is dismal to say the least.
It seems that difficult decisions by the Granger/Nagamootoo government and widespread sacrifices by the people will be required to rescue the industries and the economy. The excesses of the last government has ruined the country to the extent that it has made the poor much poorer and the rich far richer.
The previous government had failed to heed the signs that the economy was crumbling. This would mean that in the new government having to prescribe large doses of strong medicine to salvage it and develop a pathway to growth and buoyancy.
The citizens are entitled to know whether the former government deliberately hid the true state of the economyand the nation’s finances from them. Since the passage of the budget in August, the public is being kept in the dark about how the government intends to develop the country.
The people are aware of the forensic auditing of several departments and agencies, but they are not being told of the findings or lack thereof. They will not be forgiving if the government refuses to make public its findings from the audits.
No one knows the plans to turn the sugar and rice industries around, solve the crime issue and create jobs for the youths, some of whom have turned to crime to get ahead.
A carefully thought out development strategy would require genuine consultation with the citizens and qualified personnel at home and from the diasporato help formulate an economic recovery strategy. The government must focus on prudent decision-making to make the economy thrive again. It cannot make the same mistake like the PPP administration which had lost its way in governing the nationand had indulged in an unprecedented splurge of reckless, frivolous spending of the taxpayers’ money and an orgy of waste and massive corrupt practices.
The government has to adopt sound prescriptions to prevent the economy from flat-lining. The government cannot panic; it must have the good sense to reach out to qualified, skillful and talented persons in the diaspora in order to prevent the collapse of the economy.
The Government must demonstrate goodwill by reposing confidence in the wisdom of citizens. It must be open and honest with them about the current reality, without exaggeration. It must explain with conviction and integrity the available alternatives for dealing with the crisis, the rationale for chosen the course of action, the timelines involved and the costs of doing nothing versus the cost of taking action.
All the citizens must receive the same message about the government’s strategies and tactics to nurse the ailing economy back to good health. The people are far more rational and reasonable than the government thinks.
However, there is widespread disenchantment about the lack of jobs and about how the people, especially those in the diaspora are being treated by the government. Many in the diaspora who had helped to finance the party are now being ignored. They are so deprived of information from the government that they gave the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Carl Greenidge a standing ovation for taking time out from his schedule to address their concerns on Thursday in Brooklyn. They were grateful to Mr. Greenidge for his excellent presentation and answers to several questions on the border dispute, the economy, job creation, the rice and sugar industries and other domestic issues. They are thankful for his graciousness.
