Recently, the Leader of the Opposition, Bharrat Jagdeo, has been traveling the country in a campaign style mode urging the supporters of the PPP to recommit themselves to the party because it is poised to win the next general election which he claimed would be held in two to three years. This means that he is hoping for the coalition to fall apart before 2020.
Many are confused by some of his statements, primarily because he has not clearly articulated anything new except to gloss over the years of his presidency to criticize the newly elected APNU+AFC coalition government.
Neither his views nor his leadership is relevant in today’s society because he does not display the qualities of a 21st century political leader. In fact, he is completely out of touch with the problems facing the poor masses. For twelve years, he catered only to his relatives and rich friends.
As a former president and now the leader of the opposition, Jagdeo has made several mistakes, some of which were very poor decisions but they eventually resulted in personal gains for him. One such mistake was his refusal to support the unity of the nation and the formation of a national unity government advanced by APNU+AFC coalition government.
He comes across as being very disingenuous which clearly indicates that he does not believe in unity but divisive politics. The only reason proffered by him was that Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo should not spearhead the unity talks. His petty and vindictive attitude has no place in politics. And for him to stoop so low reveals the true nature of his character.
Another mistake he has made was to criticize the APNU+AFC coalition government over the training exercises of the troops and placing them on alert in regard to the deployment on Guyana’s border by Venezuela.
It is absurd for Jagdeo who does not have any military experience whatsoever to tell President Granger, a retired Brigadier of the Guyana Defense Force with more than 30 years of military experience that his handling of the troops was wrong. Jagdeo is insecure and craves the public attention to build his confidence. He should refrain from telling the President about military operations and focus on how he would help make Guyana the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business.
A third mistake Jagdeo made was to take the leadership of the PPP away from former President Ramotar who is now in wilderness. Jagdeo’s action has created disunity in the PPP and has antagonized the rank and file members across the country. A forward-thinking and visionary leader would have used a different approach to gain the leadership of the party.
Other mistakes Jagdeo has made were to build the Skeldon Sugar Factory which is only now being made to operate near its level of efficiency. He has presided over the bankruptcy of GUYSUCO, CLICO and nearly presided over the demise of the NIS not to mention the secret deals he made on the construction of the Berbice Bridge and the Marriott Hotel.
The fact that he has lost the credibility of some PPP supporters, could spell disaster for him and the party which did not gain a majority in the 2011 election and lost the last election. It is likely to lose another. His actions proved to be less than that of a capable leader and they have highlighted his inability to lead the party. He should adopt a new leadership style; one befitting that of a 21st century leader who is in sync with the realities of the people. For now, he has to go back to the drawing board and do some serious introspection.
