Dear Editor,
Sigmund Freud postulated that when action and motive are separated then the mind of that person is in trouble. Brendon Mounter initiated a vituperative action against me but his motive is yet to be determined. At first, one thought that the motive was a correction of comments made by me of Magistrate Ann McLennan. He observed that he has been watching my judgements on the magistrate the past year. In two letters on me there is no direct reference to any castigation, critique, condemnation, judgement, accusation, fulmination, vilification of the magistrate by me that Mounter has identified. What then is Mounter’s irritation?
It has to be connected to an item or several pieces of commentary. I know of no one that disparages a commentator, analyst or politician without the action centered on a particularity or specificity that triggered the initial instinct to write. What caused Mounter to rant about me? If it is the total ensemble of my work then that is logical but there must be a triggering moment. Shakespeare wrote in Macbeth that we all have our hour on stage and then vanish. Was it that Macbethian reflection that caused Mounter to write? The American painter Andy Warhol wrote that everyone craves their fifteen minutes of fame. Is that the reason Mounter went on a verbal rampage?
His first letter was a phantasmagoria of images of me. – I am a troubled man. I am one who seeks attention. I am a bully. I am one of Guyana’s most dangerous men. I had a troubled past. I was bullied at school. I have no friends. All of these psychological descriptions of me by a citizen who openly and unambiguously admitted that he hardly read my columns because he only reads me when he is bored and he is a person who is seldom bored.
I replied and inquired of Mounter how he can be such an infrequent reader of my offerings when he can cite several examples of my adumbrations going back years. Well he replied. And in so doing exposes his deceit in even more graphic ways. Mounter compels you to ask him what background he comes from. From a simple question of how he can read me only when he’s bored yet can cite so many of my encounters, he trips out again and goes on a mad rage about my character again.
This man cannot argue a simply point. So here we go again in his second letter – I have a patchy understanding of real life; I grab the headlines for the wrong reason; I pretend to be an intellectual. I am a schoolboy-attention seeker; I am miserable as sin. Mounter seems to have an obsession with calling me all sorts of things. Then he does the unthinkable; that he is a frequent digester of my commentary. Here is Mounter in his own words; “So here is my confession, I am agreeing with you, I Brendon Mounter do read, in the main, most of Freddie Kissoon’s writings in the Kaieteur Newspaper, on the surface”
What an acrobatic display. From reading me only when he is bored and he is hardly bored, Mounter confesses that he digests most of analyses. I am wondering if Mounter isn’t confusing reading and understanding. What does “on the surface” means when you read a newspaper article? What any sane mind would ask Mounter is if I am this troubled human being that Mounter makes me out to be then why would he read most of my columns even on the surface. If I am an attention-seeker, why is he interested in reading such a columnist?
I am coming to the conclusion though I am reluctant to embrace it with definitiveness that Mounter, like a certain nationally known fake pollster, has an obsession with having his hour of recognition by trying to criticize Freddie Kissoon. I believe most readers of the newspapers know the fake pollster has an obsession with me. For last week, he wrote five, yes five letters on me in this newspaper. Am I that interesting for the same person to publish five letters on me in one week?
Well I think Mounter got his hour. But unfortunately, in a truly embarrassing way. I hope Mounter isn’t going to follow in the footstep of the faked pollster. In the meantime, I need to know from Mounter’s frequent reading of my pieces what is it I wrote about Magistrate McLennan that has so infuriated him. Or is he trying to get into the magistrate’s good books. Does he have a case coming up in front of her? If that is so, I can have a word with the magistrate though I wouldn’t want to pervert the process of justice.
Frederick Kissoon
