Pele Football Club’s talisman Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson was yesterday named the COURTS Player of the Month for the inaugural Stag Elite League. Sports journalists, representing the various media houses in Guyana, met at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), where they unanimously voted in favour of Richardson.
In fact, when asked to select a player for the award, the media stated that while the league has been competitive, Richardson stands out above the other players, since he has single-handedly carried Pele on his shoulders to date.
With four goals from four matches including a double, Richardson’s form has resulted in Pele’s second place position in the point’s standings behind Alpha United, on goal difference, +4 to +3.
Richardson’s reward is a $25,000 shopping voucher, compliments of COURTS Guyana Inc., which will enable him to shop items at the country’s leading furniture and appliance store in the amount of the coupon.
The Stag Elite League kicked off on Friday September 18 at the Leonora Track & Field and Football Facility with Pele defeating Georgetown Football Club in the inaugural game, 2-1.
Though Richardson didn’t find the back of the net he was instrumental in both goals scored. In the team’s second game, Richardson netted both goals and carried Pele to an entertaining 2-2 draw with Alpha United.
Against Buxton United, Pele won 3-1, Richardson opening his account just seven minutes into the game, tucking in a Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant pass with a left footed volley that easily beat Jason Cromwell in goal.
Facing Slingerz FC at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Base Camp Ayangana ground, Richardson scored another classic in added on time (90+3) to secure a 1-1 draw. Up next for Richardson and Pele is their first meeting with Fruta Conquerors on Friday at the Tucville ground from 20:30hrs. (GFF)
