Parmanand Max Persaud claimed ‘gold’ for Guyana in the just concluded Suriname’s Republic Bank Invitational Golf Tournament played on Saturday and Sunday 3rd and 4th October last. The competition was played under the Stableford format, with some 90 golfers from Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, French Guiana and Suriname competing.
Guyana’s prize winners (from left); Lakeram Ramsundar, Parmanand Persaud, Shanella Webster, and Kalyan Tiwari.
“I found the course a tough one, because of the dryness of the earth,” Max Persaud informed, “but I kept focus and determined to play well. At the end of the first day with 35 points I was 4th in my group, but on the second day I brought in a blazing 41 points to give me an aggregate of 76 points and make me the winner in my group of some thirty-seven golfers,” he commented of his victory. It is believed that this is the first time Guyana claimed a 1st position in the B-Class in Suriname’s Invitational.
In the Women’s B-Class, 3rd place winner Shanella Webster, produced a fantastic play over the two days. Tied for 8th on the first Day, 9 points behind Hanka Wolterstorff, 8 points behind Patty Tjin A Tsoi, and 5 points behind Carmelita vid Blankevoort, Webster stormed back by 8 points on Day 2 to tie for that day’s second place with Wolterstorff, while vid Blankevoort edged into that day’s first place! When the aggregates were taken for the two days, winners were – 1stHanka Wolterstorff (76); 2nd Carmelita vid Blankevoort (73) and 3rd Shanella Webster of Guyana (67). Patty Tjin A Tsoi also amassed 67, but because of Webster’s better 2nd day’s score she claimed the 3rd prize.
Webster also won the Longest Drive in her group, while Kalyan Tiwari won the Longest Drive in his Men’s A-Class, and Lakeram Ramsundar the Nearest The Pin prize in the Men’s B-Class.
In fact, Max Persaud’s Day 1 play (35) was quite impressive, tying for 4th with Kenny Attai, Martin Wolterstorff, and Milton van Brussel, behind Allan Beeldsnijder (37), Hubert Kock and Anne Harmsma (38), highlighting the fierce competition in the top seven in the group. His Day 2 play was phenomenal, placing him a clear winner, as only in the A-Class did 3 others achieve such a score in either of the two days (Amoko – 43, Day 1; Bu Young Lee (2nd place winner A-Class) 42, – Day 2; and Isami Shirahata 41, -Day 1)!
In the A-Class of 27 men, won by JurgenAmoko (84), Guyana’s representatives were Kalyan Tiwari (48), John Tracy (53), Lakeram Ramsundar (57), Alfred Mentore (60), and Patrick Prashad (62) who placed 13th.
In the B-Class of 37 men, won by Parmanand Persaud (76) other representatives from Guyana were Brian Hackett (51), Jerome Khan (52), Troy Cadogan (54), Patanjalee Persaud (60), and Dr Philbert London (65) who placed 9th in that group.
