Plans in train for massive role in Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary
Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) is planning to play a major role in Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary next year through expansion of its wide range of activities to make a positive difference in the lives of youths, the elderly and less fortunate.
Minister Cathy Hughes (2nd right) with RHTY&SC Hilbert Foster (right), Mark Papannah (2nd left) and Greg Butcher.
The club, which has been organising over 200 programmes/activities annually, recently paid courtesy calls on several government officials including Minister of Sports the Honourable Nicolette Henry, Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Catherine Hughes and Director of Sports, Mr. Christopher Jones.
A three member delegation led by Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster, senior member Mark Papannah and Rose Hall Town Interim Management Council Member, Greg Butcher met with the officials to discuss areas of cooperation.
The team discussed the hosting of a Cavalcade of Sports in February 2016 at the Area ‘H’ ground over a two day period. The event would see teams from the Township of Rose Hall and surrounding villages involved in a series of events, including cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, athletics and female softball cricket.
The main aim of the Cavalcade of Sports would be to promote the value of sports and physical fitness among youths in Berbice. The club also discussed the possibility of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport printing more copies of the RHTY&SC Youth Information booklet for distribution to schools across the country and also for national youth sports teams.
The booklet, which has proven to be very popular in Berbice, contains basic information on a sports code of conduct, general sports etiquette, a sportsman as an ambassador, drug abuse, peer pressure, HIV/Aids, basic public manners, table manners, public speaking, suicide, importance of religion, how to behave during a public ceremony, choosing friends and personal hygiene.
Discussion with Minister Hughes and officials of the Ministry of Tourism centered on the hosting of several programmes with the brand Rose Hall Town, aimed at promoting Guyana’s smallest town and attracting visitors.
The three projects submitted for consideration are the hosting of a Rose Hall Town Night and Exhibition, an annual Berbice Fashion Designer competition and a Rose Hall Town Christmas Village during the festive season.
These projects were the ideas of members of the club’s cricket teams and would be coordinated by the players and the management of the club. Minister Hughes congratulated the RHTY&SC on its outstanding work and was very impressed with the youth information booklet.
Discussion with the Director of Sport focused on the club’s Tribute to Cricketers programme, the hosting of a double-wicket competition for female players and assistance to less fortunate cricket clubs in the ancient county.
Foster informed that since the club has surpassed its 2015 target of 200 programmes/activities and over three months still remains for the end of the year, they are looking at other areas to focus on.
Special emphasis he stated would be placed on promoting Rose Hall Town and raising the status of its image. Foster expressed gratitude to the government officials for accommodating them whilst expressing confidence in government’s cooperation to make the programmes a reality.
