Leonora defeated Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) by 16 runs to retain the 5th annual MYO/Raf’s Variety Store Inter-Jamaat 10/10 nationwide softball title on Saturday night at Albion.
Led by a fine 53 from man of the match Safraz Karim, Leonora posted 121-4, batting first. Karim who slammed three fours and a similar number of sixes, added 55 for the opening stand with Mohamed Riaz who made 24 (2×6) to give their team a solid start after they were inserted. However, Safraz Esau applied the brakes on the scoring with some tidy bowling as he finished with 3-14. Amir Nizamudeen chipped in with 14.
MYO were limited for 105-6 in reply. Chien Gittens struck 55 and shared in a 58-run second wicket stand with Fazal Rafeek to steady the chase, but consistent bowling by Leonora spearheaded by Fareez Hussain, kept the defending champions in the hunt. After Rafeek went for 15, MYO found it difficult to maintain the required rate- Gittens struck three fours before he was dismissed. Hussain claimed 3-12.
Albion overcame Adventure by eight wickets in their third place game. Adventure scored 80-6 off their reduced quota of seven overs. Shaz Grosvenor scored 37. Albion responded with 83-2 in 6.1 overs. Imran Khan hit 30 and Sharaz Ramcharran 27. Mc Donald had 2-16.
Leonora edged Albion in their semi final game. Batting first, Leonora managed 87-9. Ganesh Narine made 25; Imran Khan and Imran Mohamed captured three wickets each. Albion threatened but faltered in the latter stages as they ended on 83-7. Satesh Latchana made 26 as Asif Saffie and Fazeer Hussain had three scalps each.
MYO overcame Adventure by 46 runs in their semi final encounter. MYO batted first and scored 137-6. Rafeek slammed 59 and Wazir Hussein 19; Yaseer Mohamed had 3-17 and Leyland Mc Donald 2-24. Adventure replied with 91-8. Andy Dass made 26 and Chabilall Etwaroo 19; Shazim Hussein claimed 3-13 and Rafeek 2-22.
In the quarterfinals, MYO trounced Fyrish by seven wickets. Batting first Fyrish managed 100, while MYO responded with 101-3.
Leonora beat Farm by 78 runs. Leonora took first knock and scored 123-9. Ganseh Narine led with 38; A. Khan had three wickets. Farm were sent packing for 45 in 6.4 overs in reply. Salim Jamat and Fazir Husain picked up three and two wickets respectively.
Albion got the better of Queenstown by seven wickets. Queenstown were skittled for 52; Imran Hassan had four and Ricky Amoi three wickets. Albion responded with 53-3.
Adventure beat Grove by 48 runs. Adventure posted 114-7, taking first turn at the crease. Munir Amin made 26 and Javed Azeez 24; Wazir Yusuf and Salman Ghanie claimed two wickets apiece. Grove replied with 79-9 with 22 extras. Mc Donald snared 3-13 and Yaseer Mohamed 2-16.
Leonora took a trophy and $300,000. MYO a trophy and $200,000, Albion a trophy and $100,000 and Adventure a trophy and $50,000.
Karim was given the best batsman prize and MVP and man of the match in the final, Mc Donald the most outstanding bowler, Imran Khan the man of the match in the third place game.
The competition was played in memory of the late Hajjin Zaleena Rafeek.
