Dear Editor,
As a road safety advocate for many years, an immediate concern is personally witnessing so many of our young motorcyclists dangerously weaving in and out of traffic on their super bikes without helmets. This is against our laws. Whilst these motorcyclists and their pillion riders may be enjoying the feel of the sun on their scalps and the wind in their hair, evidence indicates that helmets decrease fatal and non-fatal injuries. Wearing a helmet is the most effective way of saving one’s life, and it substantially reduces health costs as head injuries require specialized medical care that our families and country cannot afford.
With more vehicles on our roads and the upsurge of road traffic fatalities and injuries, an enquiry into the debatable issue of persons driving without ever taking a driver’s test is long overdue and we also need to urgently revise our present driver training courses.
Most of our road crashes are avoidable, but yet every day our road safety laws are broken through speeding, drinking and driving, not wearing a seat belt or helmet, and constantly using a cell phone whilst driving. Road safety education and law enforcement are essential.
Too many precious lives have been slaughtered on our roads.
Yours for the safety of our children.
