The ANSA McAl/Lucozade Handicap Squash Tournament drew to a close yesterday with several exciting matches at the Georgetown Club.
The event, hosted by the Guyana Squash Association (G.S.A.) in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel saw Peter-Michael DeGroot and Maya Collins winning the Open and Category ‘A’ divisions respectively.
DeGroot began with a handicap of-8 but still managed to unsettle Taylor Fernandes, who began with 7 points, with good use of the court to take the final 2-1 (15/13, 13/15, 15/12). DeGroot bossed the match from its inception to its conclusion, despite a second game loss, as he had several 5 point winning streaks.
Earlier, Maya Collins was victorious in Category A when she defeated the diminutive Demetrius DeAbreu in straight sets.
The enterprising Nyron Joseph beat Regan Pollard 2-1 in an exciting match where the impressive Joseph was able to make several remarkable returns.
On Saturday evening DeGroot and Taylor Fernandes fought their way to contrasting victories in the Open category.
Earlier in the evening Nyron Joseph went down to Taylor Fernandes in 3 games. Joseph, with a handicap of -20, won the first set 15/12, before Fernandes held on to the advantage with 15/-2, 15/4 wins.
Later on Saturday evening, DeGroot made use of Regan Pollard’s -6 handicap to earn a victory by virtue of a 2-1 (12/15, 15/1, 15/10) result in a much more intense encounter.
Ben Mekdeci fought to victory over a battling Ashley DeGroot and a handicap of -13 by a 2-1 margin. Mekdeci lost the first game 13/15, before showing composure to win the second 15/5, and finally taking a hard fought third game 18/16.

Speaking at the simple presentation ceremony Tournament coordinator Tiffany Solomon thanked ANSA McAL for their gracious sponsorship, and acknowledged the usual support of Corporate Sponsor of the G.S.A Digicel. Solomon also noted the success of the tournament, which was able to attract entries whose ages ranged from age 6 to above age 60.
