The National Sports Commission (NSC) under the inspiring leadership of Director of Sport Christopher Jones continues to invest heavily in the development of sports across Guyana. Last Wednesday, the NSC handed over two cheques worth $200,000 to the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&EC) at its Homestretch Avenue Head office.
Half of the sponsorship will go towards the hosting of the clubs’ Silver Jubilee Tribute to Heroes Programme under which their greatest twenty five cricketers for the period 1990-2015 would be honoured.
Included among the honourees who would be recognized at a gala luncheon on Sunday October 25 are Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Shemaine Campbelle, Abdel Fudadin, Esuan Crandon, Shawn Grant, Shawn Perriera, Clinton Pestano, Khemraj Mahadeo, James Fraser and Erva Giddings.
The NSC would also be assisting the RHTY&SC to promote the game of cricket among females with the hosting of a double wicket competition in Berbice. Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in accepting the contribution from Director of Sport, Jones, stated that it is quite pleasing to note that the Government of Guyana is investing heavily in sports.
Foster noted that sports is one of the main avenues to keep youths away from the social ills of society while praising Jones for his proactive leadership of the Department of Sports. The Tribute to Heroes programme, the long serving Secretary/CEO informed would be one of the major programmes of the club’s year long Silver Jubilee celebrations and they have extended an invitation to His Excellency President David Granger to be the Guest speaker.
The female double wicket competition would be organised with the main aim of attracting new players to the game in Berbice. Among the players expected to be a part of the historic one-day tournament are Shamaine Campbelle, Tremayne Smartt, Erva Giddings, Plaffina Millinton, Melaine Henry and Shenella Grimmond.
Jones underlined the NSC’s commitment to assisting every Guyanese towards fulfilling their potential in sports; he also praised the RHTY&SC for the role it is playing in molding youths in Berbice.
