Local lightweight champion, Dexter Gonsalves, trooped to the Avenue of the Republic office of Abdool and Abdool Insurance yesterday afternoon and conformed to the contract signing rituals for his fight against Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell on Saturday October 24 at the Giftland Officemax Mall, Lilliendaal, ECD, for the Fecarbox jnr/lightweight belt.
Having completed those formalities, later in the afternoon, the lanky fighter headed to the Forgotten Youth Foundation Boxing Gym, James Street Albouystown, to resume training for the bout.
Clive Atwell resides in Dominica and had heightened training sessions after agreeing to fill in as the substitute after Iwan Azore was forced out of the fight with an injury to his leg. Atwell was due to return to Guyana to open camp at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG) late last week but after discussions with his training team, changed his mind and has opted to travel to the United States of America where he has opened camp at the Gleason’s Boxing Gym, Front Street, Brooklyn NY.
Kaieteur Sport spoke with Atwell yesterday morning and he revealed that he arrived in the USA around mid morning last Sunday and opened camp at the Brooklyn based facility one day later. He said that he is working under the tutelage of former world rater, now turned coach, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore, former top amateur boxer, Randy Tappin and former Olympic Games representative, Delon Carew.
“This is an unbeatable team and already I am settling down and getting into stride,” said Atwell.
Atwell’s Coach, Lennox ‘Cappell’ Daniels, has only just returned from the USA but Atwell said that he has instructed Moore on his (Atwell) training itinerary for the short stint in New York. Atwell said that he will return to Guyana at least 10 days before fight night so that his fans here could assess his fitness level and determine whether he is fully fit for the impending fight.
“I can assure you that I will be at my raging best for this fight,” Atwell responded to a question
from, this reporter.
Indeed, Atwell will do well to take his training seriously since Gonzalves , usually a reticent boxer, uncharacteristically blurted that he (Atwell) will not get past the fourth round. This was during a press conference at the Avenue of the Republic office of Abdool and Abdool Insurance Brokers, last week, when the match was formalized.
“I am 100% confident of taking this fight,” Gonsalves had proclaimed shortly after his bout with Iwan Azore was cancelled. “Talk is cheap,” Atwell had responded via telephone shortly after the organizers had acquiesced to the requests of journalists and made the connection.
“The (Guyanese) public knows my ability but Dexter has every right to his opinion,” Atwell had pronounced even as he promised to teach Gonsalves a lesson in the finer art of the sport. He had promised to dedicate himself to the task in order to whip himself into the best possible shape. The U&SA sojourn has endorsed the serious approach Atwell has taken to the bout.
Meanwhile, Mr. Abdool has extended gratitude to the executives of Giftland Officemax for making their venue available. He said that the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) was not attracting the wide cross section of the population as was believed while other outdoor venues left the promoters at risk due to the inclement weather.
Vice President of the Nexgen Global productions, Aleem Hussain, is the man in charge of efficiently advertising the card and other technicalities. He assured that tickets bought for last month end’s card are still valid for the new date. He also assured patrons that the card would be qualitative while pointing out that there would be added entertainment activities.
Several other bouts will entertain the spectators including the main supporting bout where Quincy Gomes will match gloves with Anson Greene in a 6 rounds welterweight affair while national amateur bantamweight champion, Imran Khan will make his debut against David Thomas over 4 rounds in the lightweight category. Keeve Allicock will also battle with Stephon Gouveia in a featherweight fight over 4 rounds.
There are also four amateur bouts where Republican, Nankumar Singh will be up against Kellon King in a lightweight match while Harpy Eagles representative, Travis Hubbard tackles Orin Bancroft in another lightweight (youth) encounter. Glenroy Smith (EBG) will match gloves with Republican, Clifton Graham in a welterweight bout while Tefon Green (GDF) and Dexter Wray (REP) will square off in an Elite Flyweight contest.
