The Guyana Floodlight Softball Cricket Association’s (GFSCA) fifth annual three-day International Softball Tournament “Guyana Softball Cup 5” was officially launched yesterday at GCC Bourda.
According to the GFSCA, 26 teams will vie for championship honors from October 30 to November 1 at several City grounds before the competition, which is anticipated to be full of pulsating action on and off the field, climaxes with the grand finals under lights at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground in Queenstown.
Hosting the entire tournament should cost approximately $9 million and seven teams from the New York area, two from Florida and two from Canada will travel to South America for what organisers claims to be one of the biggest softball cricket tournaments in the world.
In addition to the overseas teams, 15 local teams from Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice will compete in what is expected to be 48 riveting matches. The 2015 tournament will see Wolf’s Warriors hoping for a successful defence of their open title while Floodlights will be aiming for a repeat of last year’s tournament when they captured the Masters crown in their own backyard.
Teams will compete in two categories (open and masters) and the open winner will receive the wining trophy and $800,000, while the runners up will take home $200,000.
The winner in the Masters competition will collect $600,000, while the runners up will get $150,000 and the Player of the series in both categories will each receive a Gold bracelet with diamonds. Three fans at the final will win a return trip to Barbados.
GFSCA President (ag) Jailall Deodass highlighted that the tournament is now the marquee event of sports in Guyana while Secretary Lalta Gainda noted that the tournament has grown over the years, and has become the single largest tournament locally.
Meanwhile, representatives of two of the 12 sponsors, Darshanie Yusuf, PRO of Ansa McAl said that the company via its Stag Beer brand was proud to be a part of the competition for the second year adding that cricket was a gentleman’s game and Stag was a man’s Beer.
Atisha Isaacs, Senior Representative of Clear Water, the official water of the tournament, reiterated the sentiments of Yusuf while adding that it was the company’s pleasure to be a part of such a well-run the tournament.
Since the inception of the tournament Ramesh Sunish of The Trophy Stall has provided all of the trophies and medals. Gurvy C. Harry, Administrative Officer, National Sports Commission, Education Ministry, Department of Culture, Youth & Sports, said the Government of Guyana will continue to aid in the development of all aspects of sport and its athletes in Guyana.
The Government official, speaking on behalf of Director of Sports Christopher Jones told the gathering which included softball cricket officials and players, that the Guyana Softball Cup 5 has the full backing of the Government.
“The government has a pledge and will definitely live up to that pledge, which is to support sports and its athletes” he said.
When asked what support the Government planned to make to this event, which he said could increase the number of overseas Guyanese visiting here during the weekend the tournament is held, Harry stated that once associations do what is required of them by the NSC they will try to accommodate their request for support.
“Only five of the local sporting bodies are up to date with their reports to the NSC but what I do know is that this body (GFSCA) had discussions with the Director of Sports and I am sure they made some proposals to him” Harry stated.
Harry said he would love to see the GFSCA, at the completion of this event, think of organising a national school’s softball cricket competition like the programme Digicel runs for School’s football.
“After each tournament the GFSC undertakes a venture for cricket development and last year we put up lights for night cricket at the DCC ground and we are planning to construct an all weather practice facility. Those plans are now being looked at” said Ricky Deonarine, an executive of the GFSCA.
