Anisa Hafiz of the Rose Hall Town Primary School was crowned champion of the recently held Demerara Bank sponsored Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) cricket teams’ Spelling Bee competition for Primary schools in the Central and Lower Corentyne areas.
Hafiz’s schoolmate Akeena James copped the second place with Kishan Moosami of Cropper Primary placing 3rd.
The competition marked the 200th programme organised by the club for 2015 and completed the projected amount the club had set itself for the Silver Jubilee Anniversary. This has been achieved with three months still to go to compete 2015.
Based on the measure of success, the management of the club and cricket teams have now revised the target to 300 programmes before the end of the year and will be done under sports, education, anti-drugs, anti-suicide, anti-crime, youth development, community development and charity among others.
The Spelling Bee competition was coordinated by Ministry of Education Region 6 Officials Simone Dainty and Satesh Oudit and was very competitive with a total of eight schools participating.
Each of the top three winners received trophies and educational supplies while the Rose Hall Town Primary School received a championship trophy. Each participating student in the competition received a gift while several lucky students who sat in the audience received special gifts after being invited to spell words related to social issues and sports.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster in a passionate speech to the students urged them to stay focused and to develop a habit of reading and research while at the same time, staying in school to complete their educational career.
Foster also urged the students to have faith in the God they believe in and to always strive for excellence while getting involved in sports as it is a safe avenue to stay away from the social ills of society.
Representative of Demerara Bank, Mr. Nicholas Ramsarran congratulated the winners and urged them to continue developing themselves. The bank, Ramsarran shared, is committed to the development of the educational sector and would continue to sponsor such programmes as part of its corporate responsibilities.
The event was planned and organised by the Rose Hall Town Pepsi Under-19 teams as part of the club’s contribution to the township of Rose Hall which is celebrating its 45th Anniversary.
Among the other projects hosted by the different cricket teams of the club so far were a public exhibition, medical outreach programme, evening of music with the Guyana Defense Force, a 5-over cricket tournament, installation of an anniversary billboard, distribution of school bags and footwear and printing of an information brochure.
